Umeå University is looking for a Staff Scientist in bioinformatics for 3D electron microscopy, based at the Department of Chemistry. The position provides expertise in electron microscopy and multimodal imaging analysis for life science research, supporting users across the national and Nordic microscopy community.
About the Position
This is a temporary, full-time appointment for 12 months. The role sits at the interface between electron microscopy and computational image analysis, combining hands-on research support with method development and teaching.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead individual research support projects in EM image analysis
- Teach postgraduate methodology courses on EM data analysis
- Perform computational image analysis, including tomographic 3D reconstruction and segmentation
- Coordinate facility projects and contribute to protocol development
- Implement new computational tools and workflows
- Collaborate with microscopy facilities nationally and internationally
Required Qualifications
- PhD in cell and structural biology, bioimaging, biotechnology, data science, or an equivalent field
- Extensive (3+ years) experience applying and/or developing advanced digital image analysis methods in bioimage analysis
- Demonstrated expertise in tomographic 3D reconstruction
- Proficiency with multiple 3D image analysis, segmentation, and visualisation software packages
- Background knowledge of EM data collection (SEM, TEM, cryo-EM)
- Strong communication and cooperation skills in English
Preferred Qualifications
- Postdoctoral experience or equivalent industry background
- Familiarity with microscopy sample preparation and instrument operation
- Expertise in reproducible research and FAIR data principles
- Competency with version control, workflow languages, and container solutions
- Experience training deep learning models on HPC resources
- Established international networks in electron microscopy
